What Should You Have In Your Gift Closet

These are the essentials you’ll need to have a functioning gift closet. No need to buy all at once. Just pick them up as you come across them in your shopping for other items. Sales racks and clearance aisles are the best place to grab these deals.

  • Greeting Cards for birthdays, graduations, holidays, etc.
  • Wrapping paper, bows, and ribbons suitable for all occasions, be it a Christmas party or a baby shower.
  • Decorative gift baskets in different sizes
  • Assorted gift bags
  • Scissors and tape

Tailor your gifts to your social circle, family and friends. If most of your friends have young children, kid-friendly cards and gifts would be useful for upcoming birthday parties. Here are a few ideas to get your gift closet going…

How To Organize Your Gift Closet

Keep in mind that your gift closet doesn’t actually have to be a closet. It can be a small storage space under your stairs, or a couple of shelves in your garage. You’ll just need a couple of organizational items to keep it tidy and easily accessible.

  • Shelving if your using a corner of your garage (be sure to use bins that are not see through in this case)
  • Labels for your storage bins that can be made with a permanent marker and some masking tape
  • A lock for the door if your gift closet is in a highly trafficked area of your home
  • Accordian file folder to categorize greeting cards
  • Baskets to organize pens, tape, gift tags, etc.
  • Clear plastic storage bins of assorted sizes

Organize your gifts by occasion with all of the Christmas themed presents, cards and wrapping paper in one bin and all of the Valentine’s Day items in another for example. Or, you could separate the gifts by gender and age group. Maybe there’s a box for baby girl’s toys and clothes and a separate one for baby boys. Just be sure to include neutral gifts that are appropriate for any occasion and for any person.

Need A Gift For A Party

Skip the store and the shopping. Avoid those pesky check-out lines all-together and head down to your basement (or wherever your gift closet may be). Choose a gift and a card, grab a cute gift bag and some tissue paper and you’re all set.

Ideally, you’ll keep the gift closet neat. It won’t save you time if you have to rumble through an unorganized mess. Secondly, keep it stocked with bargain finds and clearance deals. You can find appliances at home stores, kids games at toy stores, and other goodies at thrift shops. The best time to shop is at the end of a season. Stock up on those Christmas cards when you’re out and about after the 25th.
